Physical vs. Virtual Agent Embodiment and Effects on Social Interaction

چکیده
Previous work indicates that physical robots elicit more favorable social responses than virtual agents. These effects have been attributed to the physical embodiment. However, a recent meta-analysis by Li [1] suggests that the benefits of robots are due to physical presence rather than physical embodiment. To further explore the importance of presence we conducted a pilot study investigating the relationship between physical and social presence. The results suggest that social presence of an artificial agent is important for interaction with people, and that the extent to which it is perceived as socially present might be unaffected by whether it is physically or virtually present.

Are physically embodied social agents better than disembodied social agents?: The effects of physical embodiment, tactile interaction, and people's loneliness in human-robot interaction
Two experiments were conducted to investigate the effects of physical embodiment in human–agent interaction. Experiment 1 (N 1⁄4 32) shows positive effects of physical embodiment on the feeling of an agent’s social presence, the evaluation of the agent, the assessment of public evaluation of the agent, and the evaluation of the interaction with the agent. A path analysis reveals that the feelin...
متن کاملRobots or Agents - Neither Helps You More or Less During Second Language Acquisition - Experimental Study on the Effects of Embodiment and Type of Speech Output on Evaluation and Alignment
When designing an artificial tutor, the question arises: should we opt for a virtual or a physical embodied conversational agent? With this work we contribute to the ongoing debate of whether, when and how virtual agents or robots provide more benefits to the user and conducted an experimental study on linguistic alignment processes in HCI in the context of second language acquisition. In our s...
متن کاملSocial Dimensions of Robotic versus Virtual Embodiment, Presence and Influence
Robots and virtual agents grow rapidly in behavioural sophistication and complexity. They become better learners and teachers, cooperators and communicators, workers and companions. These artefacts – whose behaviours are not always readily understood by human intuition nor comprehensibly explained in terms of mechanism – will have to interact socially. Moving beyond artificial rational systems ...
متن کاملEmbodiment and Interaction in Socially Intelligent Life-Like Agents
This chapter addresses embodied social interaction in lifelike agents. Embodiment is discussed from both artificial intelligence and psychology viewpoints. Different degrees of embodiment in biological, virtual and robotic agents are discussed, given the example of a bottomup, behavior-oriented, dynamic control of virtual robots. A ‘dancing with strangers’ experiment shows how the same principl...
متن کاملComparing Physical and Virtual Embodiment in a Socially Assistive Robot Exercise Coach for the Elderly
We present a socially assistive robot (SAR) system designed to engage elderly users in simple physical exercises. The role of physical embodiment in our exercise system is explored with a large multi-session user study comparing the effectiveness of a physically embodied robot coach to that of a virtually embodied robot coach (a computer simulation of the same robot). The study also illustrates...
